Arthritis

Ms. L, who is 60 years old, has been dealing with degenerative knee arthritis for a prolonged period. The pain in her knees has significantly impacted her overall well-being. Typically, she is afraid to leave the house; the individual experiences pain when walking for more than 15 minutes. This is affecting her ability to go out on her own. Despite receiving hyaluronic acid injections and taking painkillers, the pain did not subside after visiting the doctor. As a result, Ms. L sought relief from her symptoms by turning to traditional Chinese medicine.

The three most common types of knee pain are:

Over time, the knee joint takes a beating, and the cartilage can start to wear down. As time passes, the accumulation of calcium deposits can result in bone spurs and joint deformities, leading to considerable discomfort and pain in the knee joint. This can impact the function of daily activities and quality of life, especially in older individuals, postmenopausal women, and those who are overweight.

TCM Treatment

Acupuncture:

 Pick acupoints to

  •  Invigorate the spleen and stomach, resolve dampness, and reduce swelling.
  • Encourage better circulation in the knee joint and promote the repair of cartilage.
  •  Enhance blood flow and provide nutrients to the joints.
  • Strengthen the quadriceps.

Herbal medicine:

Helps to nourish the liver and kidneys, strengthen muscles and bones, promote blood circulation, and eliminate blood stasis to regulate the body.

Degeneration of the knee joint is not limited to elderly individuals and can affect people of all ages. Individuals who frequently exhibit poor posture and have excess weight may encounter arthritis issues sooner than expected. Taking care of your joints involves avoiding movements such as squatting, kneeling, and maintaining a healthy weight. For individuals experiencing knee pain, weight loss, increased blood flow with heat therapy, and wearing appropriate supportive footwear are recommended. To cushion your knees, you can use insoles. Additionally, performing leg lifting exercises or other workouts that strengthen the quadriceps muscles in your thighs can improve knee stability and prevent injuries.
