How Does Acupuncture Treat Achilles Tendinitis?

Causes and Symptoms of Achilles Tendinitis

The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the body, also referred to as the Achilles tendon. Its proximal end connects to the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles of the calf, while the distal end attaches to the calcaneus (heel bone). Notably, there is a region 2-6 cm above the heel bone that lacks blood supply. In contrast, the proximal end of the Achilles tendon receives ample blood flow from the surrounding area of the calf. Areas of the tendon with reduced blood flow are more susceptible to degeneration and injury.

The primary function of the Achilles tendon is related to the movement of the ankle joint. Activities such as walking, running, jumping, climbing stairs, and weight-bearing all involve the ankle joint and, consequently, the Achilles tendon. Common causes of inflammation in this tendon include overuse and aging.

Acupuncture for Achilles Tendinitis

Symptoms of Achilles tendinitis include pain, soreness, and stiffness above the heel that worsen with activity. The pain typically occurs in the early morning or after periods of rest following strenuous exercise. There is noticeable tenderness in the Achilles tendon. If the condition progresses significantly, the area may swell considerably or even develop nodules. Traditional Chinese medicine often employs acupuncture to treat this condition, aiming to relieve muscle tightness, enhance local circulation, and promote healing.

Comparison of traditional treatments with acupuncture

Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine that involves inserting fine needles into the skin to stimulate specific body areas. This practice can help relieve pain, relax muscles, and reduce swelling. Many NBA teams have utilized acupuncture for decades, particularly in rehabilitating Achilles tendon tears.

Conclusion

Acupuncture  for Achilles tendinitis not only alleviates pain around the tendon but also promotes healing within the tendon itself. Clinical studies have shown that electroacupuncture stimulation can significantly enhance cell recovery and increase tendon strength, thereby reducing the risk of re-rupture.
