Bell’s Palsy- Speed Up Recovery and Reduce Sequelae.

What is facial palsy?

It is the function of losing the movement of one side of the facial muscles, including a crooked mouth, unable to smile on one side of the face, leaking water when drinking, food stuck on one side, loss of taste or dullness, numbness and dullness on one side of the face. Although Bell’s palsy is not as common as a cold, it can make people reluctant to go out and then refuse to interact with people and stay home.

The causes of facial nerve palsy caused by peripheral nerve injury can be divided into six categories: Bell’s palsy, infection, trauma, tumor, neurological disease, and congenital problems. The most common cause of peripheral facial nerve palsy is Bell’s palsy. It usually happens in adults, especially people with diabetes, immunocompromised patients, and pregnant women.

Following Bell’s palsy, symptoms will continue to worsen in the first few days and gradually stabilize after a week, typically improving within a few weeks, with complete recovery in about six months. Unfortunately, a few people continue to have some of Bell’s palsy symptoms for life.

TCM

Traditional Chinese medicine treatment will be based on the patient’s constitution, symptoms, and pattern identification.

  • Wind-cold or wind-heat assailing the collaterals.
  • Wind phlegm obstructing the collaterals.
  • Deficiency of qi and blood leads to a lack of nourishment of meridians and external pathogens.
  • Syndrome of internal stirring of liver wind.
  • Liver qi depression.

Acupuncture combined with Chinese herbal medicine can be used for internal and external treatment to accelerate nerve recovery, enhance the immune system, and prevent a recurrence.
